Come to Maker Square at Felt Club: XL Holiday in LA this Sunday, Nov 18

If you're anywhere near Los Angeles this Sunday, November 18, we hope you'll visit the campus of Los Angeles City College for the second annual Felt Club: XL Holiday event. We're featuring handmade amazingness from over 70 artists, crafters, and designers from SoCal and beyond--many of whom will be offering holiday-exclusive items.

If all that isn't enough to grab you, this year we've also got the all-new Maker Square area, a mini version of Maker Faire, hosted by the staff of Make and Craft magazines. The Maker Square portion of Felt Club will feature people like Syuzi Pakhchyan and her Soft Circuits LED felt holiday ornaments, Mister Jalopy, who will demonstrate his Mobile Drive-In Movie Projector (featured on the cover of MAKE Vol.11), Jason Torchinsky's "Super Stick", a 5-foot tall Atari 2600 joystick (which actually works!!), Jed Berk and his Blubberbots, and many more. In short, you won't want to miss your chance to hang out and meet all the Makers at Maker Square! Link.

We'll also be giving away killer door prizes from our vendors and sponsors (sneak peeks are available in our Flickr pool), and swag bags will be given to the first 250 people through the doors. (You can increase your chances of being one of them by purchasing an advance ticket at one of our seven ticket locations throughout LA.) We'll have food available too, from local fave Auntie Em's Kitchen--plus music from DJs Dirty Robot and Lance Rock (host of Nickelodeon's hit kid's show Yo Gabba Gabba).
Felt Club: XL Holiday featuring Maker Square
Sunday, November 18, 11am-6pm
@ Los Angeles City College

KLRU-TV Docubloggers - Maker Faire
The KLRU-TV story on Maker Faire Austin is going to air tonight on the Emmy Award-winning Docubloggers. KLRU only broadcasts to central Texas, but Docubloggers is available online (link below).
On October 20th, 2007, the people behind MAKE and CRAFT magazines brought the Maker Faire to Austin for the first time (it's only the third Faire ever). In this day of DIY (do-it-yourself in case you're wondering) enthusiasm, the Faire unites "makers" of all ilk to showcase their myriad and varied talents and expertise.KLRU-TV Docubloggers - Maker Faire Link.
When I was introduced to MAKE and CRAFT magazines, I found myself guffawing with nerdly delight page after page as I learned how to turn my bike into an iPod charger, how to convert bowls from Ikea into three dimensional stereo cabinets, and how to make a ghoulishly wicked skull-shaped cold cut sculpture for a Halloween party. Then ... I saw the ad for Maker Faire. I reasoned that if the Faire tickled my geek side as much as the magazine, I was in for a treat. I was not let down. The folks behind the Faire filled the Travis County Expo Center grounds with wall-to-wall makers from a guy that creates masterpieces out of dirty car windows, to a master piƱata maker and children's book author, from robot overlords and their automated subjects, to custom bike makers, and from an insane clown posse and their bigger-than-life-size Mousetrap game, to the makers behind a human-powered Ferris wheel that rolls on its own. It was truly a feast for the senses, and those are but a small portion of the heaping helping of makers at Maker Faire.
So, if you're the type of person that likes to DIY, or if you've ever explained to your wife that you simply cannot throw out any of the assorted junk in the garage because "it's good for something", then I highly suggest you check out what MAKE has to offer. And if you're looking for something to scratch your itch to create, check out next year's Maker Faire in October 2008.

Maker Faire Austin on Boing Boing TV
Boing Boing TV (which I help produce) is running some of the videos I shot at Maker Faire in Austin last month.
Xeni Jardin writes: "What kind of DIY tech wonders can you find at Maker Faire? Make Magazine editor-in-chief and BBtv co-host Mark Frauenfelder traveled to Austin, TX with camcorder in hand to show us. Mark introduces us to a ticklish dinosaur robot named Pleo (above), and a guy named Craig who makes amazing garage-tech musical instruments." Link

Robots at Maker Faire Austin
On today's episode of Boing Boing TV, MAKE editor-in--chief Mark Frauenfelder looks at some of the venerable Robot Group's contribution to last month's Austin Faire.
Mark also covers Bleep Labs' Thingamagoop analog synths. I have a review of these cool little synth critters on the Federated Media Holiday Gadget Guide. You can read that here.
